Premium domain

A domain the registry has flagged for higher pricing — usually short, dictionary-word, or category-defining names. Premium fees are set by the registry, not the registrar.

How pricing works

Premium .com inventory was set in 1985 and is fixed (no premium tier from Verisign). Newer TLDs (.io, .ai, .app, .dev) reserve premium tiers — short common words can register for $1,000–$50,000+ at first registration, with higher renewal rates.

Renewal trap

Register a $5,000 .ai premium and the yearly renewal may also be $5,000, not the standard rate. Always check the registry’s renewal pricing tier.
